India has overtaken Japan in buying and selling small cars, sales of small cars fell in the western markets and robust growth has been reported in Asia. This has led to redrawing the map of the global auto industry faster than many have expected in May.

It is well known that China will overtake the U.S. as the world's largest car market this year. Less noticed is the fact that India will surpass Japan for the first time sales of subcompact cars. It overtook Japan as world number one1 producer of cars based in 2007.

Automakers like Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, General Motors and China's Shanghai Automotive Industries are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the country, hoping to capture a share of the growing market for tiny cars tourism cheap. As they do, they are quietly transforming India into an export center for manufacturing small cars.

"From the perspective of small car production hub, India is in the center of the radar," said Michael Boneham, head of Ford India, which plans to roll out its first India-made compact, Figo in the first quarter of next year.

More than 892,000 cars based - the smallest category of passenger vehicles - will be sold in India this year, up 14 percent last year and exceeding forecasts of 708,034 for Japan, according to JD Power and Associates.

Unlike China, Russia and Brazil, where consumers buy a range of cars, from simple to luxurious, Indians prefer by far the cars affordable.

Nearly half of all cars sold in India - as Maruti Suzuki Swift, GM Spark and Santro Hyundai - are the basic category. These cars are so small they are almost nonexistent in the U.S. market. Think of them as sub-compact sub-regional.
