First Bank sale of Texas branches canceled
First Banks Inc. and Sterling Bancshares Inc. said Monday they have terminated the purchase agreement inked taken August 7 by their bank subsidiaries, First Bank and Sterling Bank.
Financial companies said the termination is without penalty to either party and was a mutual decision after it was determined that the transaction could be completed by December 31 as provided in the purchase contract .
First Bank President and CEO Terrance McCarthy, and president of Sterling, president and CEO J.Downey Bridgwater issued a joint statement: "Although we believe that this transaction could still be beneficial to both companies, the current environment has made obtaining regulatory approval of a longer process than anticipated, and we have reached the point where it is in the best interest of both our franchises to terminate the agreement and proceed forward. "
Banks were first announced in August that it planned to sell its 19 branches in Houston, Texas-based Sterling Bank for 30 million dollars.
